Online Communication
Online Communication
Awareness: The only online communication tools that I used were Skype, MSN Instant Messenger and Microsoft Lync (from previous course). At my current work, we use an IPV called Polycom.
Exploration & Filtration: My team members and I communicated through emails. We decided the date and time for our synchronous meeting. We also decided to use the following provided in the module:
- Zello – used to be LoudTalks (Voice Over IP )
- Google Hangout – online conferencing tool
Learning
Zello: This tool reminds me of a modern “walkie talkie” or pager. I installed zello on my computer without any issues. When I need to talk, I have to click on a button to talk. Only one person is able to talk and the time limit is about one minute. If you talked over the one minute period, you were disconnected. I have to keep reminding myself to click on the button, talk, pause and let go of the button, and talk again. That way everyone will hear the conversation without begin cut off.
Google Hangout: Even though this tool is not on the list, we decided to test it simply because one of the team members was familiar with it. Setting up is a breeze as long as you have google or gmail account. All you have to do is to sign in. In hangouts, users will be able to instant chat and video call. During a video call, users will be able to share screens and apply special effects to the screen. There is a limit of 10 users per video call.
Application
I would not recommend Zello to anyone. However, I would recommend Google Hangout to some faculty at work. They are looking a way to have synchronous meeting with their students and without breaking the budget. Google Hangout will be perfect for class presentation too.
